Updates on the changes to driving test bookings
Share
We are now in the middle of April 2026 and the first of the changes to driving test bookings has come into operation.
Two changes allowed
For the last three weeks, we have been operating under the new rule regarding how many times you are allowed to change your driving test. Previously candidates could change their test up to 6 times, but now only two changes are permitted.
What counts as a change?
There are three changes which 'count':
- Changing the date or time of your test.
- Changing the test centre
- Swapping the test slot with another candidate
If you change more than one thing at the same time, then it's still only counts as one change. For example, you could change the date, the time, and the test Centre all in one go, and that would constitute just one 'change'.
The next set of rules to change
This new set of rules will be in place until the 12th May 2026. From that date onwards driving instructors will no longer be able to book tests for their students, or manage those tests on their students' behalf. From 12th May, the only person who will be permitted to change your driving test is you.
How will ZED School adapt these changes?
We have made plans to support the new system for booking driving tests. When your instructor is satisfied that you are ready to take your driving test, they will open up additional features on the website enabling you to book a lesson on the day of your test. You will be able to use the ZED School website to reserve the date and time of your booked driving test. It will not be necessary to talk to your instructor about this, and you will be able to make the reservation at the same time as you book your driving test on the DVSA website.
The final set of changes
Starting 9th June 2026, the last of the changes regarding driving test bookings will come into effect. This change will limit the number of driving test centres that can be chosen when moving the location of your driving test. Under the old rules, you were able to move your driving test to any other test centre in the UK. Under the new rules you will only be able to move your driving test to the three nearest test centres.
